Dear MOMdotCOM.net Friends,
Yesterday I received a note that made me sad, from a user that has not had success with surveys and “threw in” the proverbial “towel.” I sincerely feel for this woman- I have personally “been there, done that.” We all invest time and hope, on occasion, in avenues that just don’t pan out.
Ever had a bad dating experience? The same holds true for online programs…
This is a harsh reality of working with online programs (and in our “real” life work opportunities,) some companies are just not a good fit for us. When this happens, it is best to move and explore an alternate route.
If surveys do not work for you, try mystery shopping. If data entry companies aren’t beating down your door, consider applying for call representative jobs. You can always return to your initial endeavor and add it to your repertoire.
Sometimes what happens is we just need to give things a little more time.
Markets change, needs change, and you may find that one month a survey company is sending you seventeen opportunities and the next month you receive none. (For this reason, I always highly recommend signing up with multiple companies to maximize your opps!)
One thing I know with 99.99 percent certainty. If you are persistent, if you commit the time, and if you remain open to exploring various avenues for earning and saving money via the Internet, you will succeed.
Persistence is key. There are some avenues, such as blogging or selling your crafts, that do not bring a steady cash flow in the beginning of your venture. And again, as the market fluctuates, jobs like surveys and mystery shopping may be plenty or scarce.
Time is hard to come by, but if you want to earn or save, it’s generally worth every penny to dedicate an hour of your day to helping out your financial situation.
Keeping your options open will bring you many rewards. I also highly recommend not “putting your eggs in one basket” and only signing up for surveys. There are many things such as couponing and focus groups, that you can participate in/with simultaneously—doubling and tripling your earning and savings!
Best wishes to you for a successful journey!
Not Having Any Results
QUESTION: Yes, I was reading your article in Womans World about at home work. I have logged on to the sites you have said and have not had any results.
Do you have to enroll and pay money before you can make any money? Any help or advise you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
ANSWER: Sometimes it takes a bit to hear back from companies, but if you are interested in a particular area, I suggest signing up with multiple companies.
For example, survey companies and mystery shopping companies don't always have weekly assignments. By signing up with several companies, you will keep a steady flow of assignments as opposed to having occasional assignments with just one company.
If you are looking for more Survey companies, check here: http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/10/great-gift-idea.html

and if you visit MOMdotCOM.net (my website) http://www.momdotcom.net/ you'll find a lot of other ideas and opportunities.
I suggest that you never pay a company money. This is generally the first sign of a scam. Like any job, the money should be paid to you for your hard work.

Scams and Online Data Entry Opportunities
QUESTION: I have just read the article in Women's World and am very interested in a Work-from-Home job, since I have xxxx and can not find a job for the life of me. I have a computer and Internet service and believe this would help me alot.
Please help me through the process of finding a job to work from home, I am very gun shy since I was burned recently by a scam.
I would appreciate any information you can provide to me for me to get started. I am really interested in the Data Entry jobs.
Thank you for your help in this matter, I look forward to hearing from you.
ANSWER: I'm sad to learn that you have had problems with scams in the past. Sadly, there seem to be so many these days!
The first, and best, rule of thumb is to not pay money in to earn money. Legit internet opportunities, for the most part, do not require any investment that would differ from employment outside the internet realm. You may need some tools (a fast internet connection, a reliable computer, and so forth,) but you should not have to pay someone to hire you.
If you are seeking legit data entry opportunities, you'll want to start with this article: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1802964/work_at_home_job_facts_data_entry.html?cat=31 which gives a detailed overview of Data Entry requirements and on the second page, offers companies for you to explore employment opportunities with.
I hope this helps you on your journey!

Disability and Taxes
QUESTION: Do you get paid by check for these surveys? I am on disability and can't afford to lose it by making extra money because I would lose my health insurance as well? Do they take out taxes and report the earnings?
ANSWER: Survey companies reward you for your participation in many different ways. Some offer gift certificates as rewards, some offer prize incentives, and other offer cash. Those that reward you with cash payments will typically offer a check reward or a Paypal payout. Most of the rewards are exactly that, an incentive for offering your opinion.
In most instances, you are not considered an employee of the company that is conducting surveys, so it falls under the same tax guidelines that other incentives do, such as accepting a gift card or a discount for filling out a credit card application.
With that said, I'm not a certified accountant, so I do suggest that you check with yours to find out the federal guidelines and the state guidelines for your state for reporting income from incentives.
If you plan to work exclusively with a survey company or engage in other activities such as mystery shopping, and make part-time wages, you may fall under the role of an independent contractor. In this case, the IRS offers online publications for filing requirements for employment http://www.irs.gov/publications/p501/ar02.html#en_US_publink1000220720
Again, though, I suggest checking with your accountant regarding federal guidelines and state guidelines for reporting income.
I hope this is of some help. I'm really not qualified to give advice regarding tax laws for others. Be sure to speak with your local tax representative or a quality accountant.

Data Entry Opportunities
QUESTION: First, I want to say that I appreciate the information you are sharing to help stay at mom's find work to contribute to the household budget. It is greatly appreciated and makes my search for work at home more bearable.
The question I have is in regards to the information for Data Entry work at home jobs. All the sites that I have opened up from leads via your site request money to get started. Do I need to purchase the information before I can get a data entry work at home job. After reading other material from your site, I think that sites that request money should raise a red flag. Please advise.
ANSWER: Thanks for you very kind compliment. I'm so happy to learn that you are finding some of the information helpful!
Did you look at this Data Entry article linked on the website? http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1802964/work_at_home_job_facts_data_entry.html?cat=31
On the second page, you will find a list of legit companies that, to my knowledge, do not charge. They are standard companies where you will fill out an application for employment.
I checked out the first two Affiliated Computer Services http://www.acs-inc.com/ and DionData Solutions http://www.diondatasolutions.net/opportunities.htm to make certain that they had not changed their policies, and indeed, they are still hiring by application with no fee involved.
You are dead-on to suggest that a company should not charge a fee, money should always flow to you, not away from you! (However, with that said, there are occasionally software upgrades needed for your computer, extra phone lines, or other equipment requirements you may need to have for Telecommuting jobs that are not always provided by the company. These are always reasonable expectations, though.)
If any of the companies listed in the article have changed their policies and are now charging for services, my apologies, and just strike them off your list of prospects.
Also, I send out updates from time to time to my newsletter group, as I run across new (legit) opportunities. Feel free to sign up and also feel free to email me back with any questions you may have.
I hope this helps!

How to Get My Blog Noticed?
QUESTION: My biggest problem is getting my blog noticed so that people know I have an e-book. How do you build a following? I am working on the squidoo lens now that you mentioned in your article.
ANSWER: Starting with some Squidoo pages may help drive traffic towards your blog and book. If the information on the page is useful, people will find it, appreciate it, and look to your blog/book for more.
There are tons of ideas on how to build a following. I still stand behind creating quality content as number one. When your readers know they can expect to find consistent quality and useful information, they will return and in turn, you will build a loyal following.
Some other ideas:
1- Start a newsletter group to deliver daily/weekly/quarterly tips. This is a good way to stay connected with your readers.
2- Consider hosting a giveaway. This may bring new readers to you. Be sure to post the contest on contest-friendly websites such as prizey.net
3- Guest blog on other websites. Create a series of articles to offer and ask "like-minded" bloggers if you could provide guest content for them. This will bring new traffic your way as people who are interested in the content will check out your website/book.
You can also work on SEO wording and listing with search engines to build traffic (not my expertise, but some use this technique.) Being active on other social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) or forums (iVilliage, Gather, etc.) can be helpful towards building your internet presence, too.
There are many books on the subject, such as The Frugal Promoter. These may be of help in giving you additional ideas.
Just remember, it takes time to build a loyal following and everyone has their own path to follow. If you are passionate about the topic, keep at it and you will be successful!

Surveys Not Working for Me
QUESTION: I am wondering if you could give me some suggestions on legitimate ways of earning money at home. I have a 40hr./wk. job at a nursing home, a job which I love, but I need some extra income. I have signed up for a few surveys but after the preliminary survey it often says I'm not eligible to take the survey. I'm just wondering what else is out there that I can try.
Thanks for what you do!
ANSWER: Sometimes surveys are not the route to go. Depending upon your interests and lifestyle, you may not be a good match with a survey company. If you've tried a few already, consider other alternatives to surveys, such as Focus Groups http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/01/focus-groups.html or Mystery Shopping http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/01/lengthy-list-of-mystery-shopping.html for earning opportunities.
There are so many avenues to explore. If you haven't checked out my current list of legit programs detailed on MOMdotCOM.net, you'll find it here http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/03/work-at-home-job-facts-online-surveys.html
If any of these do not appeal to you, tell me more about your interests and I'll see what I can do to help steer you towards exploring other opportunities.

Mystery Shopping Laws in Nevada
QUESTION: I have emailed both of the companies you listed in your Woman's World article on Mystery Shopping and have not heard from either. I live in NV and have been told it is illegal to do Mystery Shopping in this state without a Private Investigator's license. Wanted to know if that law has changed recently or not. Would love to do Mystery Shopping here but can only work with legally operating businesses.
I have read your book and learned a great deal about the Internet. Thank you. Hoping to find a way to earn an income from home.
ANSWER: Thank you for your inquiry and for your kind words! I'm so glad you have found the guide useful.
Sometimes, with Mystery Shopping companies, you may not fit the demographic requirement or they may not have shops available in your area. It helps to sign up with multiple companies. This give you a wider reach and can help keep you busier with assignments! You'll find a longer list of legit companies here: http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/01/lengthy-list-of-mystery-shopping.html
Regarding Nevada law, as I do not live in the region, I'm not familiar with the laws. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce, they may be familiar with requirements for Mystery Shoppers in the state. I also found this website http://www.nationalshoppingservice.com/public/popups/mystery_shopping_laws.asp and they have Nevada laws listed. I'm not certain how current or accurate the information is, though.
Hope this helps! Wishing you well in your mystery shopping pursuits!

Google Ads
QUESTION: I visited your site after reading the Aug. Woman's World article. My question is, as I'm checking out your website, is, how much can the ads by Google on the site be trusted?
Other than wondering about that, I was impressed with your article and what you were able to filter out from all the spam and dishonest ads online to actually make good money.
ANSWER: Thank you for your inquiry. Many of the ads found in the "ads by Google" section are placed by, what I would consider to be, trustworthy companies. Some are not. I do my best to keep the ads filtered, but as I always advise, proceed with caution in any online venture. (There are two sections devoted to avoiding scams and how to detect scams, in The Mom's Guide to Earning and Saving Thousands on the Internet. If you do not have a copy of the book, you might find one at your local library, my favorite freebie source!)
Thank you for your kind words. It takes time to weed through and become established with companies, but it is well worth the effort if you are looking to supplement your income or just breathe a little easier.

Survey Questions
QUESTION:
My computer security does not like the way this site has its security set up. It indicates that security for ACOP is set up for one web site and the registration is under a different Web site.
I am very excited about your article in Woman's World expecially the opportunity to take survey's for cash. Most of them only offer $1 to $2. To get to the $800 quoted in the article Would have me working 24/7. Any hints.
ANSWER:
I've been a member of American Consumer Opinions for about 7 years now and find them to be a reliable company. Not certain why your computer doesn't "like" their website. Perhaps they have someone designs their work for them which would explain the dual registration?
I've listed out my all-time favorite survey companies on my Survey facts page http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/10/great-gift-idea.html - try the link there for ACO.
There's a lot more than $1-$2 to be made from survey companies. Key to earning is to stay with the companies (the more "rep" you build, the better offers that come your way) and to fill out the screeners for future opportunities. You don't have to work 24/7.
However, as the article says, my earning isn't just based on working with survey companies. I also mystery shop, ebay, swap, blog, write how-to's, etc. etc. Diversification and trying out new opportunities keeps the money flowing. Here's more detail about some of the areas I've just mentioned: http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/03/work-at-home-job-facts-online-surveys.html and of course, you'll find a lot of information in my book, too. Check your local library to read it for free :)
On top all that, consider how much you can save each month, too. I have a basic philosophy, "a dollar saved is a dollar you don't have to earn." This has kept our budget plentiful. Frugal and eco-living doesn't have to mean doing without, it just means doing better with what you have or need to have. You'll find a lot of tips on how to get you started here: http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/10/money-saving-topics.html
Also, stay on top of daily topics, freebies, contests, and so on at Rural Mom http://www.ruralmom.com/ or feel free to sign up for my news letter. I often share new info as I find it on both of these resources.
Try these areas out. Check back with me in a few weeks, I'd love to hear how you are doing and will be happy to answer any questions, head you in new directions, and so forth.

Promotion and How Do You Get a Blog Following?
QUESTION:
I read the article about you in Woman's World and had a couple of questions.
*How did you get featured in Woman's World
*The blog websites that were mentioned in the article that pay for you to review a product - do you already have to have a blog following
*How did you build your blog following?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
ANSWER:
Hi, and thanks for your inquiry!
*How did you get featured in Woman's World
I answered the right person at the right time. Seriously. I've been in Woman's Day, Redbook, MSN Money and so on and it all comes down to looking for opportunities and sometimes, just being noticed for what you do.
I wish there was some trick to share. Most important to me has always been to do what I love and to share... but I don't have much "wisdom" to share on this subject... writing a book certainly helped lead to PR opportunities, but other than that I just continue to try to make a difference and stay open to possibilities.
*The blog websites that were mentioned in the article that pay for you to review a product - do you already have to have a blog following
No. I made a point to mention companies that accept new blogs as well as established blogs.
*How did you build your blog following?
Produce quality content that you (and others) would want to read/learn from. And continue to produce quality content. There is no better way to engage and keep a loyal audience.
Secondary, socialize. Be active and present in the groups and forums you belong to. Read other people's blogs and participate. (It's a great way to form new friendships, too!)
If you just want blog "numbers", host contests, list with a zillion search engines, optimize your SEO, promote, join blog circles, and run a search for other ideas to popularize your blog. With the exception of hosting a few contests throughout the year , I don't do any of the above, but many have used these techniques successfully.
I hope this helps! If you have additional questions, please feel free to give a holler.

Need a Marketing Strategy
QUESTION:
Thanks so much for your quick and helpful response. Tell me more about your book writing and publishing experience. I have written an e-book that is currently available on scribd.com but I need a marketing strategy.
ANSWER:
Tell me a little bit more about what you'd like to know the most about re: my publishing journey. As there's so much involved I could probably fill up a book! My biggest asset was perseverance. If you have a great idea, don't give up!
Congrats to you on your book! What's the title? Perhaps I could share it with my readers and give you a little promo, if it's a good fit for my audience.
I wrote a few articles on book/website promo that may be helpful to you:
Easy, Low-Cost Ways to Increase Your Website Hits, Gain Exposure, and Grab Internet Sales
Create a Successful Blog to Boost Your Writing Career
Seven Components of a Successful Query Letter
Defining Your Audience is Key to Creating an Engaging Non-Fiction Proposal
Crafting a Non-Fiction Proposal: How Much Do You Know About Your Competition?
Use Your Math Skills to Write a Book in a Year
A great book to read is The Frugal Book Promoter (borrow it from your local library to be even more frugal lol) - I didn't have this book when I first published, but sure wish I did. Lots of good ideas in there.
Hope that helps a bit. Let me know what you want to know more about and I'll do my best to help.

Skeptic About Online Work
QUESTION:
I am very skeptical about doing work online. I do survey's online, but not
making a lot of money for it. I would like to do some data entry. I have
been a secretary for over 25 years and would like to use my skills to make
ends meet in our home. The economy has really taking a toll on my family as
well as a lot of families and after reading your article, I would like to
some Data Entry from the comfort of my home (after hours).
I am really nervous about Scam's that are out there. Is there a list of
reliable companies that I can research (without paying anything up front)?
Please help!
ANSWER:
Dear Skeptical,
The economy really is having a profound effect on everyone, isn't it?
I wrote an article on Data Entry: Work at Home Job Facts: Data Entry If you click on the second page, you'll find a listing of quality companies that do not charge for your participation (or, at least at the time the article was written they did not.) I have several friends who have worked with some of the companies listed, so I trust that these are scam-free companies.
Navigating the web and the opportunities available can be very scary. My general rule of thumb is, if it doesn't look legit or if you have to pay to participate- run! Also, set up a dummy email (extra email account) if you are sending out inquiries, that way if you stumble upon a company that looks legit, but isn't, you won't fill up your personal email with spam.
Feel free to stop by MOMdotCOM.net and RuralMom.com for more ideas and some money-earning/money-saving help.

Trying to Get a Handle on Paying Surveys
QUESTION:
Hello: Thank you for sharing your info with us. You mentioned about making $800.00 a month earnings on surveys? How many surveys is that & how long each. Can I make this a full time job & make more money?
ANSWER:
Thank you for your inquiry and for your kind comments.
In answer to your question about surveys, you'll find detailed information here regarding surveys, lengths of survey, and what you may expect for compensation: SURVEYS
As the article in Woman's World mentions, though, not all of my monthly income is solely from participating in surveys. Other means include opportunities in mystery shopping, swapping, ebaying, and other online activities. You'll find a lot of information on these legit opportunities here: Money Earning and Work-At-Home ideas

Overwhelmed (Where do I start?)
QUESTION:
"Hello, I read the article that was in Woman's World and it gave me hope. I have been trying to find a way to make extra money so I can't quit a very stressful job. I know I'm lucky to have a job but this job makes me physically ill and I don't know how much longer I can force myself to go there.
My friend and I have placed adds to clean houses but haven't had much luck. I think people feel guilty about spending money on something they can do themselves. So I'm hoping I can find something with all of the inormation you have available, the problem is I don't know where to start, what to read first, what to do????? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time."
ANSWER:
Dear Stressed:,
First ((Hugs)) to you! Stressful jobs are very difficult to cope with.
I know you'd like nothing more than to jump ship, but my advice is to start a little smaller and build up to a point where you feel comfortable forsaking your paycheck with your current company.
Do you like customer service? Then offer call representative work from home might be for you. You can make a part-time to full-time income and you don't have to do sales. Many companies offer order-taking or general customer service jobs. Look here for more information and some legit companies to start with: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/96111/work_at_home_job_facts_call_center.html?cat=31
The same goes for data entry, if this is of interest to you, read more here http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1802964/work_at_home_job_facts_data_entry.html?cat=31
I'm not sure how much your current job offers in income, if it's part-time, you may find steady relief through survey, mystery shopping, ebay, and focus groups to supplement your income. You'll find a range of opportunities and descriptions/requirements/facts here: http://freebiemoms.blogspot.com/2009/03/work-at-home-job-facts-online-surveys.html
My general philosophy is the old-age adage: "where there's a will, there's a way." Take a look at what you can live without, where you can cut corners and save, and then how much money you realistically need to keep afloat. From that point, it will be easier to make decisions on what opportunities fit best with your lifestyle and your overall objectives.
I hope this helps a bit... feel free to write me and ask more questions, I'll do my best to steer you in the right direction!
